WHEW!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am still alive. I just finished my last Traveling Roadshow stop on the tour- Austin. Today is the 2nd to last day on a long 12 day trip. Last weekend was Atlanta, this past week was spent at a resort in Texas, and this weekend was the Austin workshop. We had a soggy weekend but still had a great time, even during our rain-soaked shoot today. And the dogs? Absolutely adorable. I swear I have the best job on the face of the planet.

In reflecting on the year’s travels and workshops, laying in bed in my hotel room tonight, it’s hard to put words around what these workshops have meant to me, and how incredible all of these experiences have been, so instead, I will plan to do review posts on each city once I get home and have a chance to decompress and come down from my workshop high. And also see my sweet pup, who I miss with all my heart. Tomorrow night she will be in my arms again. Cannot wait.

I promise to post far more regularly this month, and plan to grace this blog with many, many new dog images. Thank you all for being so patient with me.

And since no blog post is complete without a photo, here is one from our Austin shoot this weekend. This is Janie. :-)

Off to Boston and Chicago!

Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up that I will be headed to Boston this Thursday, staying through Monday morning, for my Boston workshop, then flying to Chicago next Thursday-Sunday for my Chicago workshop. I had planned to stay in Boston and Chicago next week but the thought of leaving Fergie for 12 days was absolutely killing me, so I decided to swallow hard and book the super expensive plane fare home and back to spend a few more precious days with my girl. The way I see it, Boston and Chicago aren’t going anywhere, but my dog only has one life. :-)

My sincere apologies to those who I was hoping to meet up with while there! I hope you understand that 12 days is just too heartbreaking a length of time to be away from my doggie daughter. Perhaps next year I can fly for pleasure and really get to experience the cities as they are meant to be enjoyed. This trip will be all business, 100%.

Will be offline for a bit starting tomorrow, but back with new photos! Hope y’all are having a great week. It’s sunny again in Seattle, whoopee! :-)

Oh, and a few pics of my sweet girl who is my raison d’etre.

Ruby & Buster- Santa Monica pet photography sneak-peek

I was beyond happy, positively bowled over, when Ruby and Buster’s parents offered to come up to Santa Monica from their home in Orange County to allow the pups to participate in my workshop last weekend. Some of you may remember them from our Napa Valley shoot last fall. I was so happy to see them again (the whole family), I nearly cried. Buster has lost a whopping 12 pounds and is looking sleek and svelte. hee hee

Here are some of my favorite images from our shoot:

I processed these in Lightroom with a very bright, saturated hand. I wanted to give a colorful Southern Cal feel to them. :-)

Rarely does a shot I take make me laugh out loud, but I had just gotten done telling the workshop group that greyhounds and whippets can look funny if you shoot them straight on, so I guess I just needed to inadvertently prove my own point (I forgot about this when I took this picture, but now I’m glad I did, lol)

It was some of the worst shooting conditions, being bright, midday full sun, but I like teaching about that in my workshops, because in the real world, you don’t always get to control where and when you shoot. Friday’s shoot was inside the very dark hotel lobby. That was also a basset hound, a total sweetheart named Sophie. I’ll share her pics later in the week.

Had to get the famous Santa Monica pier in the background. It was a Sunday, and extremely crazy busy that day, but the dogs were fantastic. They did *such* a good job. I’m so proud of them.

Tristan and Mark, thank you so very very much for coming all the way up to see us that day. I know the attendees had a great time, and it was so meaningful to me to see Buster and Ruby again. What a gift. I look forward to getting your whole gallery online! Oh, and if you talk to Lynn, tell her that her sneak peek is coming later this week. Sophie’s shots are even more challenging for me to pick from because she is so adorable in so many of them. I even have a shot of her running on the beach with her ears in her mouth!

And a huge THANK YOU to the workshop attendees for coming. Each and every one of you is special in your own right and I am excited to watch you all progress and grow. I plan to do another review post with some shots I took with my little point and shoot, so stay tuned for that!

Oh, and to the 3 people who don’t know, I am currently in LA on vacation, and won’t be returning to Seattle until Sunday. Off to Long Beach tomorrow, then San Diego this weekend for the big Loews Coronado Surf Dog Competition. Meeting up with some local pet photog friends for dinner tonight and my social calendar for the week looks like it did when I was 21! I’m having an awesome time and will post more soon! :-)

New Bark Magazine ad

Some of you may have seen my Bark Magazine ad in the current issue.

I updated the ad for the upcoming issue: July-August, 2009. I’m thrilled to finally be on the pages of one of my favorite magazines. :-) Check it out.

I love the stripey background colors and wish I could get away with that on my blog, but tried it out late one night and wow (!), way too much color, even for me.

Oh, and yes, that does say consulting there in the ad. If you are interested give me a shout! I am finalizing details this weekend and hope to have all of the information posted as a page on both the workshops website and a page on this blog, by Monday. I’ll be taking *very* limited private phone and 1-on-1 consults this summer so if you are interested don’t wait to contact me!

MAJOR workshops announcements and changes

I have spent weeks working on some new workshops changes and am so happy to announce I finalized them yesterday! (finally)

Now, along with the 3-day workshop, there is a new lesser priced 2-day option over the weekend- Saturday + Sunday, for those who want to save money, and/or can’t take the extra day off work, and/or who are worried about driving in weekday traffic (I hear DC is the worst!!).

The course schedule has been moved around pretty significantly, and now Friday is the optional day, with what is to be a gosh darn amazing schedule. I sent the email out to my mailing list yesterday and one respondent said “after reading your description of the entire workshop, how on earth can I do the (discounted) 2-day version?”. lol

Friday will be custom tailored to meet the needs of the people who opt for it, and will be a more informal, intimate teaching experience, with more hands-on practice. It will not take place in a classroom or studio, and instead I’m hoping we can break up the day over meals out, time at a park and/or hotel lobby and an actual full-length shoot for an actual paying client. I might just have to throw some surprises in there for the Friday people as well. ;-)

The 2-day weekend workshop will be more than adequate for most people wanting to start pet photography businesses and/or need a good push from where they are right now in their pre-existing businesses. In sum, it covers: #1: marketing, branding, websites, getting clients, making money: i.e. how to look good, where to get clients and how to do your biz. #2: how to photograph your furry clients, how to work with clients, and how to make the images look awesome with software so your clients will love them and buy them. This is a VERY simplified summary of the 2-day content. Please see the schedule page on the website for the full, detailed course description.

I have been doing loads of research on travel rates, and now is a fantastic time to travel. You can get hotel rooms for a song, airfare for not much more, and some incredible last-minute deals. I have been pretty astonished at how low rates are on everything travel-related. I just got one-way airfare from Seattle to LA on Alaskan Air (window seat) for $59. I also booked a 4-star room in LA for 45% off the regular rack rate. Awesome!

Lastly, some people have said that they plan to come to my 2010 workshops. I need to clarify something here and say that I have never guaranteed that I would teach workshops after 2009. What I am doing is creating an interest list and then IF I have enough interest in any one area I will consider it, just like I did for the workshops this year. BUT, there is a difference between considering it and actually doing it. I had to think long and hard about doing it this year, and generate enough interest before moving forward.

At this point there is only a 50/50 chance I’ll teach travel workshops again after this year, and I won’t know until the end of the year. If I do decide to hold more workshops I may stick to having them in my studio in Seattle, and only holding maybe one or two a year in my off-season like in April or May (yes I know it rains then but that’s the best time of year for me to do it), BUT, I still want to stress that all of this remains to be seen. Right now I have no PLANS to teach in 2010, but they MIGHT develop late in the year or in the first part of 2010. At this point I’m strongly leaning toward this being my last year, so- again, no promises! Don’t say I didn’t warn you! :-)
