MAJOR workshops announcements and changes

I have spent weeks working on some new workshops changes and am so happy to announce I finalized them yesterday! (finally)

Now, along with the 3-day workshop, there is a new lesser priced 2-day option over the weekend- Saturday + Sunday, for those who want to save money, and/or can’t take the extra day off work, and/or who are worried about driving in weekday traffic (I hear DC is the worst!!).

The course schedule has been moved around pretty significantly, and now Friday is the optional day, with what is to be a gosh darn amazing schedule. I sent the email out to my mailing list yesterday and one respondent said “after reading your description of the entire workshop, how on earth can I do the (discounted) 2-day version?”. lol

Friday will be custom tailored to meet the needs of the people who opt for it, and will be a more informal, intimate teaching experience, with more hands-on practice. It will not take place in a classroom or studio, and instead I’m hoping we can break up the day over meals out, time at a park and/or hotel lobby and an actual full-length shoot for an actual paying client. I might just have to throw some surprises in there for the Friday people as well. ;-)

The 2-day weekend workshop will be more than adequate for most people wanting to start pet photography businesses and/or need a good push from where they are right now in their pre-existing businesses. In sum, it covers: #1: marketing, branding, websites, getting clients, making money: i.e. how to look good, where to get clients and how to do your biz. #2: how to photograph your furry clients, how to work with clients, and how to make the images look awesome with software so your clients will love them and buy them. This is a VERY simplified summary of the 2-day content. Please see the schedule page on the website for the full, detailed course description.

I have been doing loads of research on travel rates, and now is a fantastic time to travel. You can get hotel rooms for a song, airfare for not much more, and some incredible last-minute deals. I have been pretty astonished at how low rates are on everything travel-related. I just got one-way airfare from Seattle to LA on Alaskan Air (window seat) for $59. I also booked a 4-star room in LA for 45% off the regular rack rate. Awesome!

Lastly, some people have said that they plan to come to my 2010 workshops. I need to clarify something here and say that I have never guaranteed that I would teach workshops after 2009. What I am doing is creating an interest list and then IF I have enough interest in any one area I will consider it, just like I did for the workshops this year. BUT, there is a difference between considering it and actually doing it. I had to think long and hard about doing it this year, and generate enough interest before moving forward.

At this point there is only a 50/50 chance I’ll teach travel workshops again after this year, and I won’t know until the end of the year. If I do decide to hold more workshops I may stick to having them in my studio in Seattle, and only holding maybe one or two a year in my off-season like in April or May (yes I know it rains then but that’s the best time of year for me to do it), BUT, I still want to stress that all of this remains to be seen. Right now I have no PLANS to teach in 2010, but they MIGHT develop late in the year or in the first part of 2010. At this point I’m strongly leaning toward this being my last year, so- again, no promises! Don’t say I didn’t warn you! :-)

new business changes

First off, a huge thank you to those who followed me on Twitter yesterday. I don’t have time to elaborate because I am off to a shoot, but I just wanted to say: “It’s not cancer!” yay! Thank you for all of your support! Being surrounded by caring, compassionate people makes a big difference when you are going through tough times. I’ll post more about this soon.

Secondly, there are some changes that I am making to the business, some small, some pretty significant.

The first (small) change is we will no longer be selling gift certificates, in any amount for any reason to any persons. I have come to realize that because of the relationship that I establish with each client over time, and the amount of money that people often spend, I really need to get to know them first and make sure I can meet their needs and that we will mesh well working together before any money is put toward products or services. This isn’t possible with gift certificate sales so they are nixed from the product offering. I sold very few anyway so I don’t envision this being a problem of any significance.

Second, I will be raising my prices. (I know, horror of horrors! During a bad economy even?! Yes). I don’t know exactly when this will happen, but it should be very soon, even as soon as this next Monday. I may decide to post them to my website, to be out there for all the world to see (and for some to copy, which usually happens). I am on the fence but leaning toward posting them.

Third, I will be greatly limiting the numbers of clients I take on each month, and really put the focus on quality over quantity. I work so personally with each client, and try so hard to do an excellent job for each, and this just isn’t possible when I am overwhelmed with clients. The more clients I have, the less time and attention I have to give to each of them. My best clients have been an absolute joy to work for, and I look forward to having more clients like them in the future. The new pricing structure will help ensure this will happen, and I will be able to keep my sanity, and more importantly, my health. It will also be a great thing for clients too, who will not only get the very best of me, but will also have access to bennies and discounts and special client gifts unlike anything I have done before. It’s completely a win-win situation.

Fourth, I will also be launching a new client services website this month. It will help simplify and streamline the process for everyone. And I think will be a huge boon to my clients. I will still do studio consultations in person with each client, but all of the pre-shoot info, future info, pricing and products will be very easy to reference on the new client services website. Each client will even have their own customized webpage on the site, complete with fun slideshow following the shoot, which makes it that much cooler. (I will still have detailed galleries for each client- the slideshow is an ‘extra goodie’). Another big ‘win’.

Last, I will be spending the majority of March doing things to prepare the business for this year: prepping for the workshops and getting everyone registered, catching up on *long* overdue emails, implementing new systems, catching up on accounting and forms, and also taking some time off to focus on me and my health (more on that soon). I won’t be scheduling any more shoots before April; exact timing depending on the weather. I will be excited to get out and shoot again, as the crocuses and daffodils are just starting to show their pretty heads and I have a feeling the spring is going to be beautiful.

Thank you all who follow my blog, and I look forward to sharing more with you this year.

I am off to photography Murphy in the sun! Oh, and his kitty buddy Mr Jones too. It’s sunny in Seattle! :-)

2009 Workshops update

I just wanted to let all of my 2009 workshop attendees know that I haven’t forgotten about them! I am currently working with my team to finalize all of the important details for the Traveling Roadshow, and my hope, and plan is, to have everything ready to launch by the middle of this month, so- within the next 10 days. A Valentines gift perhaps?

I am working on a brand new website, which I am very excited about. We are having to change a couple of dates due to large conventions in the cities on the originally scheduled dates. I believe it’s LA that will be one weekend later, and the August workshops are being slightly shifted too. I will have firm dates on the new workshops site once launched. And yes, the pricing will be on the new site too!

Once the site is launched the workshops will be open for registration. The only workshops that are near-full at this point are LA and Boston, but I am not worried about getting everyone in that wants to attend.

I am also hoping to take 1-2 days per city to visit friends and (hopefully) go shoot with them! I know a bunch of you have asked me to come and see you and I am really hoping to make it happen! For sure I will be taking a few extra days in LA to soak up some sunshine and meet up with friends and just enjoy the beach.

Lastly, I will also be doing a select few private client shoots in a few areas where they have been requested. Sadly I won’t be able to visit every city folks have emailed me from wanting me to shoot their pets (I know Minneapolis is out, I am so sorry!), but I will do the best that I can. I will update the cities I am available to do shoots on this blog once I have a better idea of what my schedule is.

Thank you everyone for being so patient with me! :-)
