RIP Murphy: 2000(ish)-2009

Murphy’s mom informed me that her sweet boy succumbed to the cancer that he had been fighting so valiantly since February.

Murphy lived a very tough life before going to live with his mom Allison. He was a stray that arrived at the doorstep of a wealthy family in 2003, who later released him in 2007. By that time he was in very very bad shape- the family, even with their wealth, had severely neglected poor Murphy’s most basic physical needs.

When he came to live with Allison, he was basically starting life over. And what an incredible life it was too. She loved him so deeply and so truly it showed to anyone who met them. The poor pair were constantly in the doctor’s offices due to Murphy’s ongoing health problems he suffered at the hands of neglect. But Allison never complained, she just loved her boy, and enjoyed every moment they shared together. He had a wonderful extended family, and grandparents who loved him too, as he was meant to be loved all along.

I had just a very short time with this sweet boy and already miss him. My heart goes out to Allison and her family, who I know will love Murphy forever. Rest in peace little guy, rest in peace.

If you leave a comment here for Allison she will be sure to read them. She is getting my email now about the post, and I’m sure all of your well-wishes will mean the world to her.

Take care Allison, and remember, no matter where you are or what you do, your sweet boy will always, always be in your heart.

RIP sweet Mattie: 1997(ish)-2009.

Mattie passed over the rainbow bridge yesterday, to go play with his friends in the great dogpark in the sky. He went peacefully, with his parents by his side. I know he will be deeply missed by those who loved him, and even though I spent just a short time with him, he touched me in a way I will never forget. I feel so honored to have been able to be there to capture his little spirit. Thank you so much Mattie’s parents for giving me this opportunity. Words can’t express…

A little story from our shoot. We started Mattie’s shoot at Discovery Park early last Sunday morning. It was very very cold that morning, and poor Mattie was shivering like crazy, even though we had him wrapped up in his favorite blanket with a heating pad when we weren’t taking pictures. I felt so bad for him I suggested we go to their house, which isn’t far away. At that point I learned that Mattie has two younger siblings- Kiki and Spike (you will meet them in an upcoming post), and that they were both shy/nervous with strangers.

Sure enough, when we got to the house and got inside, Kiki was too shy to come near me, and poor Spike was so afraid all he’d do was bark at me from afar (they are both rescued pups). I walked over and laid down on the living room floor, flat on my back, with arms outstretched, so they could come and sniff me without intimidation. Mattie immediately came over and sat down right next to me, his little body pressed up against my side, as if saying “she’s ok, she’s my buddy”. This expression of acceptance and love from a dog I had just met nearly brought me to tears. That is the kind of pooch Mattie was, and just one of the many reasons why I will never forget him.

Rest in peace sweet little one, rest in peace.

RIP sweet Rio 1994-2008

I received an email letting me know that Rio has passed onto the big doggy park in the sky. It fills me with sadness thinking about what a special, gentle soul she was, and how happy she was just to be alive, and that she is no longer in the physical world we inhabit.

But, I have to say that that sadness is tempered by the joy I feel in knowing that a) I got to meet and spend time with such a sweet creature, albeit just for a couple of short hours, and b) we got these photos of her when we did. I also feel joy in knowing she was deeply loved, and had a wonderful life with her family and her canine neighbor friends. I will be thinking of sweet Rio this week and wishing her well on her next adventure- chasing squirrels with abandon and catching up with long lost friends.
