My Love

Whenever I am having a bad day all I have to do is look at my girl and she makes everything ok.

en vacances

I am on vacation until January 4th. Because I don’t have a day job, this means no work for me, whoopee! :-) Ok, maybe a few hours, but mostly this will be time spent relaxing, playing with the dog, drinking mimosas, going to the park, seeing movies, hanging with friends and family, shopping and other recreational pursuits. Hope y’all are having a lovely end of 2009. I imagine everyone is ready for it to be over!!

Since no post is complete without a photo, here’s Fergie at a cabin at Mt Rainier where she spent Christmas weekend frolicking with her family.

This is the view I had pretty much the entire time we were driving. Fergie with her feet on the console, whining with excitement to see what fun place we were going to next.

Mt Rainier happened to be one of those fun stops.

This is what she looked like at the end of each night, and also what she looks like right now, still recovering from her fun 3-day trip.

I LOVE SCRABBLE!!! I won this game with something like 325 points because I’ve been playing every night on my iPhone for months. The hard level. Ohhh yeah. I only win about 50% of the time, but when I do it sure feels good…

Fergie: a personal project: part II (Fergie plays)

This is the second post in the ongoing Fergie series. This one is aptly named ‘Fergie plays’. Our shoot was on a recent chilly but gorgeous winter afternoon in the most beautiful golden sunset I have ever photographed in. To say I love these shots of my girl would be an understatement. I cried when I processed them. If I had been my own client, these shots would have been exactly what I was hoping for. Being my own worst critic, especially when photographing my own girl, this is saying a lot. I will cherish these photos for a lifetime. :-)

On the left she is wearing her Chilli Dogs sweater. I quickly learned that it’s awfully hard for an athlete to jump in a sweater, so I took it off her. The shot on the right was the result of taking it off. It’s titled ‘Fergie Flies’.

For my photog friends, I was shooting between 3:30-4:30pm, in manual mode, between 400-640ISO, between f/2.8-f/4.0, with shutter speeds between 1/500 sec -1/1250 sec, using my 20mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8 L, and 70-200mm 4.0 IS L. All evaluative metering, auto white balance (Canon 5D). Processing: increased blacks, lightened shadows, +10 in brightness, skosh of contrast, sharpened and added varying vignettes in LR2 on the shots that *weren’t* taken with the 20mm (the 20mm creates nice vignettes straight out of the camera). Also fixed white balance on the shots where Fergie’s fur turned bright red from the bright orange sunset. Oh, and my camera wouldn’t focus because it was so incredibly cold outside. (And yes my first battery died after 15 minutes).

Fergie Discovery Park shoot sneak-peek

I did a shoot this week for my girl for the ongoing personal ‘Fergie Series’ in some of the most incredible light I’ve ever worked in. This next post will be titled ‘Fergie Plays’, and I warn you, it will be very long and overflowing with images. Here is a sneak-peek to whet your whistle for now. :-)

Fergie: a personal project: part 1 (Fergie sleeps)

From time to time, when I am able to carve a few minutes of time out of my always-hectic schedule, I try to spend 5 or 10 minutes photographing my best friend in the world- Ferguson Pflughoeft (my dog, for the uninitiated). These are snapshots of moments in time in her life, shots I take for myself, that I know I will treasure for a lifetime. This post will be the first in an ongoing series. I hope you find her as interesting and beautiful as I do.

Fergie sleeps:

Fergie sleeps under the covers with me on her own accord. She walks up to the head of the bed, ‘asking’ to be let in until I pull the covers up so she can crawl under them. It’s the same every night. If I don’t do this she’ll nudge the edge of the sheets until I comply. It’s the cutest thing ever.

She was getting mad at me here because she just wanted to go back to sleep.

wanna see something really crazy? check out the pattern of the sheets in her eyes below.

_mg_9876-copyzoomed

when she gets hot she crawls out from under the sheets and lays with her legs straight out behind her in what I call her frog legs pose.

and now we move from the bed to the couch. notice how different the colors are in these next shots. most of them were taken with my cheapo 50mm 1.8 lens. it produces beautiful photos, but I rarely use it in shoots because it requires manual focus, and I don’t like forcing dogs to ’sit-stay’ very much in my shoots. works great on sleeping animals though, lol

I *love* that shot on the right below. She looks so innocent and vulnerable.

fergie has little swirly cowlicks all over her, which I absolutely love.
