At Cowbelly we love, love LOVE Pugs, and so should you!!

Bronco & Bear pug puppies

These two guys are arguably the cutest puppies I have ever photographed. 12 weeks old. Brothers. Soft, squishy, cuddly, waggy, clumsy, kissy, tan panda bear puppies. You can squeal now. :-)

Bear on the left, Bronco on the right. I don’t think I need to tell you where their names came from do I? I love how Bear is peeking over the shot in the image on the right.

The Pike Place Market is one of my favorite places to photograph puppies, for obvious reasons. Look at the little boy’s expression on the left. Ah, I LOVE it!

Rarely do photos make me laugh out loud when I look at them, even shots that others seem to find funny, I guess because I am ‘all business’ when doing my post-shoot workflow, but this one definitely did have me busting a gut. Bear: “you talkin to me??”

bronco-bear-31

hee hee hee, whoohoo. we had a nice crowd of people gathered around watching us do this. it was so fun.

Look at Bear’s face in the shot on the left. Ha!

Photo shoots are hard work for puppies. Especially in an environment as stimulating at the market. I captured no fewer than 4 yawns out of these guys in the second half of our shoot.

The End. :-)

For those who are new to my blog, you may not know this, but I absolutely adore pugs. They are at the very top of my favorite breed list, and I have been super lucky to have been able to photograph lots of them. It took everything in me to hold myself back from writing a novel above and going on and on about how cute they are and how much I love them, and how many times I squealed during our shoot, and how I didn’t want to leave, etc, etc. I could have written a whole blog PAGE about this shoot!

But, I leave you with a little conversation I had on my facebook fan page that I think pretty much sums it up:

Amy: “soooo adorable! I love it!”

Nicki: “I just want to squish their already squished faces! Way too adorable and the curious expressions melt my heart!”

Jamie (me): “LOL I was there for over two hours (I normally do a 60-90 minute shoot) because I didn’t want to say goodbye! one of the little puggers was *alseep in my arms* (faint).”

Is there anything cuter than a 12-week old pug puppy (or two) in some flowers? I think not. :-)

I have an extremely busy week ahead but I promise more of these guys to come!

we like to have fun

I have to preface this post by once again reminding everyone that I am *not* a studio photographer. Yes, I have my office in a studio, and I have done some practicing, but every shoot I have done in the studio thus far has been little more than an experiment.

I never picture myself being a studio photographer, and I pretty much suck at taking pictures with studio lighting, but from time to time I like to have fun. Natural light only, anything goes, no planning involved.

And with that said I bring you mine and my friend Victoria’s version of what studio photography *should* be. Can you tell we don’t take ourselves very seriously?

by the way, that’s me above. and seymour. I love him. A lot.

And that’s Victoria. The lucky caretaker of Charlie and Seymour, the puggie pies you guys know from this blog since way back. I LOVE that they are both laughing in the shot on the lower left!!

We cracked up when we discovered that we could synch our head tilts with Seymour’s. I have many outtakes where we are each just doubled over laughing. For each of us taking pictures, we had to stop many times to laugh it out before taking the next shot. Ahhh, Seymour is awesome.

Pugs are so gosh darn easy to get the head tilt from. Any pet photographer who hasn’t gotten a head tilt out of a pug they have photographed should be ashamed of themselves. ASHAMED I tell ya!

Anyway, it was time for some levity on this blog so I hope you enjoyed it! :-)

is it an Ewok? a baby bear? No, it’s a PUG!

Just wanted to let all of my Seattle peeps know about the fun and fabulous Pugmania pug party this Saturday, May 9th, Seattle Pug Rescue’s annual fundraising event, taking place at Magnuson Park. Some of you may recall that I had a booth there last year, and had so. much. fun. There were literally thousands of pugs there. I swear to god I have never seen so many dogs in one place before.

I don’t plan on having a booth this year, because I tent to get restless and would rather float around like the social butterfly that I am, thereby maximing my exposure to as many adorable pugs as possible. AND, getting to hang with my lovely friend Melissa Langer of Pug Notes, who is flying all the way in from Louisville, Colorado! She’s famous in the pug scene ya know, and is undoubtedly the biggest pug fan I know. (Next to me of course, lol). I can’t wait to meet her in person! I will be there with my camera in tow, taking pictures right and left (and yes I will post some here afterward), hopefully attending with my dear friend Brandie, illustrious editor of CityDog Magazine. If you see us say hi!

Oh, and this is Charlie. And yes, he is always that cute. (More of him to come).

Pugs and kisses! :-)

Sammy the pug with life lessons for us all

A few of you may remember awhile back when I posted a little sneak preview of Sammy the pug in the form of a few pano crop images. I have been wanting to tell you more about him since then but alas, haven’t had the time. (Not that I have the time now, but I couldn’t wait any longer).

Sammy is not only cute, but he is a very special pug as well. You see, Sammy has liver failure.

He has been sick since he was a little puppy. He has had more surgeries than most people you know combined, and has deep 12 inch belly scars to show for it. He has been in the hospital more times than I think even his mom remembers. And he is not even 2 years old.

His doctors now say that he has not just one, but multiple liver shunts. Essentially this little guy is a ticking time bomb.

The good news?

Sammy loves life! You will never meet a happier little pug, or a pug that is so easy to please, and so full of joy. It’s very clear from spending just a little bit of time with this special creature that he lives life to the fullest.

Sammy doesn’t sweat the little stuff.

Sammy takes advantage of every opportunity to play.

Sammy doesn’t forget to get and give love and always says yes to a snuggle.

Sammy treasures the relationships with those he loves, and makes sure to spend quality time with them every day.

Sammy doesn’t care if he is having a bad fur or face day, or even if people think he’s cute, he just wants to be happy.

Sammy never loses touch with the child inside of him, or his sense of wonder and awe at the world.

Sammy vehemently defends the underdog and is a champion for justice for all. Sammy always believes in doing the right thing and being honest and operating with integrity.

Sammy is not afraid to be vulnerable.

Sammy never forgets to stop and smell the flowers, no matter their color, type or size.

Sammy doesn’t care what people think of him because he knows life is way too short for that.

Sammy loves a big wide open blue sky, just like Cowbelly! (BTW: I *love* that shot on the left. It touches me in ways I can’t express in words.)

Lastly, Sammy is at peace with the fact that he is a mortal, and isn’t afraid to wear his emotions (or his yawns) on his sleeve, er- collar.

Dogs have so much they can teach us, and in Sammy’s case this is abundantly true. Although it’s hard to live life as he does, and remember the big picture, I think if we remember just one of his teachings every single day we will be happier, more loving, more joyful and more contented spirits.

Sammy we love you. :-)
