me, in FRONT of the lens

Some of you already have an idea of what is going on, after the email I sent to my mailing list last week about the possibility of the Pike Place Market Beautiful Beasties event being filmed for a documentary.

So here is the story. The last week has been a bit unusual for me. You see, I have been in front of the lens, a position that I am admittedly uncomfortable with, and one that is fairly foreign to me. The picture I have seen in front of me has looked quite a bit like what you see there on the left. I’m not big on self-portraits or posing for cameras, so why did I agree to be in front of a camera, you ask?

For the past week I have had the incredibly good fortune to be featured in a documentary film titled ‘American Dreamer’.

American Dreamer is a new documentary project by an award-winning Seattle director and producer. It is a series that profiles various entrepreneurs in various stages of their businesses, from the Howard Schultzs and Jeff Bezos to the Jamie Pflughoefts (that’s me for those who are new) of the world. From multi-million dollar highly successful powerful corporate leaders down to the mom and pop shop and single business owner/operator.

For the past week I have been filmed for the pilot, which will go in front of a board of influential Seattle business owners this week.

The pilot has featured me and only me (sooo cool), and we have gotten footage of me doing a shoot last Friday (see photo below), at the dog park playing with and photographing Fergie, doing a long interview answering a variety of questions, and working in my office making calls to clients, organizing images and replying to emails.

The director is currently working his magic to create a film that will hopefully inspire critical thinking on the question of the American Dream. I personally look at the series as being a kind of philosophical question, a dialogue of sorts between the participants and the viewers. It really reminds me of a film version of the NPR radio program ‘This American Life’ by Ira Glass, only focusing on entrepreneurs.

To say that I am excited about this would be an understatement, but not for the reasons you might think.

I had dinner on Sunday night with my mom and sister and told them all about the filming and they were looking at me funny at one point and stopped me.

My mom noted that it sounded as if I were talking about doing my laundry or picking up bread from the store. Like it was an everyday, ‘no big deal’ kind of thing.

You see, even though the pilot is all about me, which really is very cool in a kind of egotistical way, it’s the bigger picture that excites me. I really want to see this project become successful, not just for the national exposure it will afford my business and me as an artist and photographer, but for what I truly believe will be a gripping, and fascinating, and educational, and moving program that features real people in real lives, taking unusual tracks and pursuing their own version of the American Dream on their own terms, out from under the thumb of ‘The Man’.

I’m excited about this program in short because I WANT TO WATCH IT!

I apologize for not posting more detailed information on the film, including the director’s name, but since the project is in the very early stages I don’t want to give too much away, and want to protect the integrity of the project. There is a lot to be done yet this year before it can go from ‘film’ to series. I will do anything I can to see it happen, and if that includes being a little bit private on my blog then so be it.

I promise to post more about the film here in the future. Ok, since I am so busy, I probably won’t post anything until it can actually be viewed. But you, my lovely blog audience, will be the first to know. :-)

Dog Names Book shoot at Westlake Park

I have been having so much FUN shooting doggies lately!

Last weekend I took over 2,000 photos. Two- thousand! WOOF!

I had barely recovered from Friday’s Whidbey Island trip when on Sunday I did the first Dog Names shoot for craigslist respondees, including the unbelievably adorable shepherd mix puppy ‘Riot’ below.

Riot

Let me explain. I have been working on a book project since early 2006. It’s a small hardcover gift book of dog photos, with a ‘Dog Names’ theme. The book is about 75% of the way done, and in fact the book proposal is done as well, I just need to get the last few images for it. The book is filled with super cool and unusual dog names and no less than 85 photos of 85 different dogs who also have super cool and unusual names.

However, since many of the dogs I have shot over the years have fairly common names, and hence don’t qualify to be in the book (so sad!), and I don’t believe in giving real dogs fake names, I was still in need of dogs whose names start with ‘rare’ letters, like ‘z’ and ‘x’ for example.

So I put an ad on craigslist a couple of months ago and got over 45 responses!

I did the first of several ‘craigslist’ shoots for the book this past weekend at Westlake Park (and Freeway Park) in downtown Seattle. The reason why I chose downtown to shoot is because after talking to a friend who writes for The Bark magazine and CityDog and Seattle Magazines, and also has a couple of dog-themed books published, she suggested I have a good (and wide) variety of shots, with varying backgrounds of varying breeds.

So that is exactly what I set out to do last weekend.

It was crazy to shoot dogs in the middle of downtown but it was a blast!!

Here are some of my favorite shots of each of my Dog Names subjects from Sunday. How awesome are these dogs!? :-)

Whidbey Island ROCKS!

Have you ever been to a place- on vacation, on a weekend away, on a day trip, that for the rest of your life you can remember with all senses- sight, smell, sound, feel, just by closing your eyes? Just thinking about the place transports you back there in the most wonderful and satisfying way?

Well, Fergie’s 2nd birthday on Friday on Whidbey Island was just that for me and my sister (and hopefully Fergie too).

The people we met everywhere we went were so incredibly friendly and wonderful- everyone seemed to be in a good mood and welcomed us to their island. And talk about dog Friendly! There were dogs everywhere! Many people stopped to talk to Fergie, including a super sweet couple in Langley who also own a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix and thought Fergie was great. They and all of the folks we ran into at the dog parks confirmed what I already guessed- Whidbey residents love their dogs.

We spent ample time at two of their best off-leash dog parks. The first was Margeurite Brons Memorial park, which is a beautiful park inland in the woods. As if the large grassy field wasn’t enough, there are 13 acres of off-leash trails through the woods, FULLY FENCED. Fergie had the time of her life blazing through the trails with her two new buddies. And their owner was just one of the nicest people you’d ever meet.

After playing in the woods for a couple of hours we headed into Langley, where we ate lunch at the Useless Bay Coffee company and had one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. It was a beef and blue cheese and red onion and spinach panini, with gooey cheese and a buttery crisp crust. Thomas Kemper cream soda and mediterranean olives rounded out the meal. Yumm! They have a huge dog friendly patio area in front surrounded by stunning flowers and gorgeous landscaping. It is the prettiest of places to have a delectable and relaxing lunch.

After we ate to our hearts content, and Fergie had her fill of lunch treats and h20, we headed over to Double Bluff beach, on the southwest side of the island.

Double Bluff beach has miles of off-leash beach, with acres of sand from the bluff out to the water. Fergie chased her tennis ball out into the crashing surf (waves from passing cruiseships), until she was shaking and panting. As an urban dog owner, it was really incredible to watch my dog run free as nature intended. And not in the few acres of off-leash park like you find in and near Seattle, but in MILES of park, with so much land your dog can’t possible cover it all. So much to sniff, so many things to explore. It was heaven for all of us.

And words can’t describe the beauty of the scenery on the island. From mossy woods and rolling green fields to wide open blue sky and sandy beaches, the island is just gorgeous. As a photographer I was in heaven being there and photographing my pooch. It makes me VERY excited about the photography event I have planned for the exact same itinerary on August 18th. If you read my blog and haven’t had your dogs shot yet I strongly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity. Please contact me at 206-335-8096 for details.

I truly believe this was the best day’s of Fergie’s young life so far, and without a doubt I will take her back there again.

It was truly one of the best days I have had in a long time, and in fact my sister loved it so much she even sent me an email thanking me later that night and telling me what an incredible time she had.

As for Fergie, well she has been pretty much horizontal for the past two days, dreaming the best of doggy dreams she could possibly have. :-)

Whidbey Island we will be back!

Cowbelly Pet Photography - Paddywack Benefit Photography Show

This is what Cowbelly is busy with this week: a benefit photography project I have been working on for the past 3 years. I am really excited it is finally happening! I am doubly excited that one of my photos currently has a $150 bid on it- woohoo!

And our press release:

Month-Long Pet Photography show, and Howl-O-Ween party
to benefit Best Friends Animal Society.

Date: October 2nd 2006-October 27th, 2006
Location: Paddywack in Mill Creek, Washington

Seattle-Based Cowbelly Pet Photography and Paddywack, a pet supply store in Mill Creek, are teaming up to hold a month-long fundraiser to benefit Best Friends Animal Society. Photographer Jamie Pflughoeft will have framed photography prints of formerly homeless animals on display at Paddywack beginning October 10th. The photography will be up for silent auction throughout the month until the culmination of the event at a large Howl-O-Ween benefit party on Friday October 27th, hosted by Paddywack in Mill Creek Town Center.

What is Best Friends Animal Society?

Best Friends Animal Society reaches across the nation helping humane groups, individuals and communities to set up spay / neuter, shelter, foster and adoption programs in their own neighborhoods. At the heart of the non-profit organization is the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary for domestic animals located in Kanab, Utah. On any given day, up to 1500 animals that were once abused, abandoned and homeless can be found at the sanctuary. Best Friends gives these pets the hope of finding a permanent home and living out their days happy, healthy and loved. Funded entirely by donations from members and supporters, Best Friends relies on the kindness of strangers to keep the sanctuary and organization functioning. More information can be found at http://www.bestfriends.org.

What is the purpose of the art show?

The purpose of the art show is two-fold: The first purpose is to raise money to donate to Best Friends. Donations help keep food in the bellies of the animals that live there, and provide veterinary care, blankets, towels and other supplies.

The second purpose of the art show is to educate the public about the importance of adopting pets from shelters and rescue societies. So many loving animals are needlessly euthanized each year in the United States; Cowbelly Pet Photography and Paddywack would like to play a role in helping to reduce that number.

How do Cowbelly Pet Photography and Paddywack propose to do this?

Photographer Jamie Pflughoeft started the Best Friends Photography Project back in the fall of 2003 by selecting 20 rescued pets to photograph for the show. Jamie is donating her time, services, and a percentage of proceeds from the sale of framed photographs to Best Friends Animal Society. Art show attendees will have the opportunity to: bid on framed black and white and color photographic prints, purchase unframed (matted) low-cost prints of the same exhibit photographs, sponsor an animal at Best Friends, or donate money into a “Help Best Friends Animal Society feed the animals” collection jar.

Paddywack is designating October as “Best Friends Month” and a portion of all sales during the month of October will be donated to Best Friends Animal Society. In addition, a Howl-O-Ween benefit party will be sponsored by Paddywack and Cowbelly Pet Photography on October 27th, with a percentage of proceeds benefiting Best Friends.

The Howl-O-Ween party will include live music, pizza from Boston Pizza, dessert, hot apple cider, beer provided by Flying Dog Brewery, a costume contest with celebrity judges including John Fisher from 103.7 The Mountain, prize packages, a ‘Trick-then-Treat’ station, individual photography sessions provided by Cowbelly Pet Photography of dogs in costume, and an announcement of the winners of the silent auction for the framed photographs.

What is the photography in the art show of?

20 local once-homeless dogs, cats and other domestics, were hand-selected and photographed for the show over the last three years by Jamie Pflughoeft of Cowbelly Pet Photography. All animals once came from animal shelters, rescue societies, abuse situations or were rescued off the street, and all now have permanent loving homes. The owners received free photo sessions and agreed to have their pet’s images included in the show. The pets received treats, fun and lots of love. Each pet featured in the show will “tell their tail” in a written story on display near their photograph, which will then accompany the framed photograph when purchased.
