New painting featuring the summer issue of CityDog Magazine

I was positively delighted when Brandie sent me the photo of this amazing painting a couple of weeks ago. It’s called ‘Barkalounger’, was painted by  Washington artist Connie Townsend, and is on display over in Kirkland, Washington at the Howard/Mandville Gallery. It is for sale and I don’t know if it’s still there but you can call Pat Howard at the gallery and find out: 425-889-8212. It is of course an original one-of-a-kind and features the summer issue whose cover was shot by yours-truly. Of course, I love it because it’s a pug. Go pugs!! I get to shoot another pug tomorrow night, yippee. :-)

CityDog Magazine summer cover 2008 behind-the-scenes: Charlie & Seymour interview

I figure I could tell you all about the interesting experiences we had shooting the summer cover for CityDog Magazine, but I thought it would be much more interesting to hear it from the mouths of the cover models, so I present to you, my interview with the (now famous) Charlie and Seymour (aka Trouble and Chaos). Sorry this was so long coming! Charlie and Seymour were in Manhattan all last week shooting the new Pucci ad campaign and were kind of hard to track down for their interview.

Below: Charlie (left), Seymour (right)

Cowbelly: Tell us about your experience being cover models for the first time. Where did you go? How long were you there?

C & S: well, it was a whirlwind. mom didn’t tell us till the last minute since she knew we’d take her amex and go have a spa day. so when she told us we were going that evening to see jamie, we wish we would have had time for that paw-dicure and seaweed deep conditioning fur treatment. so, the first day we went to this awesome park where we got to see jamie again (yay jamie! - pug shout out), mom said it was in West Seattle? we think that shoot was a few hours, but something about the lighting just wasn’t working out. the next shoot was at Discovery Park, and that one was fun since we got to go on a hike to get there, so we got to tone up our muscles for the photo shoots and all those ladies who love us. mom made us get wet on the beach that time. we aren’t too fond of water, so that wasn’t the higlight of the shoot, but mom promised jamie would make it up to us, and oh she did with those salmon treats! the final shoot was back in West Seattle. And let us tell you, we were tuckered at that one. it was so much fun, but we couldn’t wait till we got to lay down, it was hot that day!

Cowbelly: As a cover model, what did you have to do?

C & S: well, we had to look pretty. which, for us pugs is not too difficult, however it was alot of work to try getting them the right shot. we were frustrating our mommy we think, she kept trying to get us to follow commands, but those stinky treats jamie had were just way too hard to resist. we couldn’t help it.

Cowbelly:  What was your favorite part about being a cover model?

C & S: all the people fawning over us! we loved those treats (another pug shout out to jamie!) would have been better though if our trailer had evian and fresh bagels.

Cowbelly: What was your least favorite part?

C & S: the pressure of making sure we were both on top of our game at the same time. Seymour here- it was hard for me to give Charlie the limelight like that. something about his coloring or I dunno. but I sulked for a few hours after we got home just so mom knew I needed attention.

Cowbelly: What was is like working with Jamie?

C & S: pug-tac-ular. (and we don’t give that honor to just anyone, just so you know) she made us feel right at home in front of that camera. we think that it really helped to show our personalities in the shots. plus, there isn’t a person in the world we’d rather go see, she has the best treats and gives us lovin and tells us we are pretty. we like hearing we are pretty. (have we said that yet? anyone who feels like telling us we are pretty gets a pug smile and cute lil head tilt. we promise)

Cowbelly: Would you ever do it again?

C & S: oh yes! in a heartbeat. (ahem, but see question #3 about the bagels please)

Cowbelly: Thank you Charlie and Seymour! I’ll let you get back to your pug-tinis and pawdicures! (They were on the set of their next film ‘Pugs in Paradise’, taking a break).

And here are a couple of outtakes from our cover shoot. Ah yes, being a model is hard work, as any pooch who has worked on assignment with me knows.

And below you will find my very favorite images from our shoots, what I call “running dogs’ shots.

A couple of weeks ago when I was in bed with food poisoning I stumbled upon a discussion post on theknot.com wedding forum that was posted by a woman who said she loved my work and was jealous. All of her friends replied with “oh there is nothing special about that photography”, “you could totally do that”, “that’s easy.”. To all of those people, I challenge you to get 31 images like this of dogs running in an 8-minute time span and then tell me it’s easy. You can send the link to your 31 photos to info@cowbelly.com. ;-)

Hope you enjoyed Charlie and Seymour!!

South Lake Union for the doggies

First off, summer is finally here, YAY!!! It’s 85 degrees in Seattle and Fergie and I just took a walk around Queen Anne and all of the people are out and the tourists are milling and everyone is happy and it’s beautiful out. (FINALLY).

In this post I wanted to finally share some images from one of my favorite photography assignments.

Those of you who subscribe to or buy CityDog Magazine will see that the summer 2008 Dog’s Eye View article is on South Lake Union in Seattle. Yours-truly did the photography for the article last month and wrote about it on my old blog. It really was one of the best days I have ever had doing photography.

For those who live outside of Seattle, the South Lake Union neighborhood is on north edge of Downtown, and sits between downtown and Lake Union. It’s an interesting mix of parks and office buildings and condos and stores. Definitely a very urban neighborhood, and is quickly up and coming.

Here are some shots from the article, along with some of my personal favorites.

Urban beast, a great store for your, well, urban beast.

They carry some of the most unique products you will find in a boutique pet store. Owner Katie Rockwell never ceases to amaze with her beautiful AND utilitarian finds.

Cascade Park, at the heart of South Lake Union, also known as the Cascade neighborhood. This harlequin great dane was enjoying the same toy that is Fergie’s favorite- the everlasting treat ball. I recognize it a mile away.

I really enjoy the dichotomy of the flowers against the urban setting. These were taken in the pea patch.

Lucy the neighborhood bulldog was enjoying an outing with her mom in the park. Her mom said she was so happy to just be outside and sit in the grass under a shady tree. She was so sweet.

The shop dog at the new City Hardware. I think his name is Bear (?). Ah, I feel terrible that I don’t remember!! He is awesome.

Gotta love the trusty 5D for getting those great indoor shots ’sans-flash’. BTW: I just darkened this photo slightly and added a teensy bit of contrast- it’s crazy that his eyes really looked like that in the shot!!

The sun was streaming in through the window in this one spot in front of the paint cans. I ended up taking pictures of him there for about 10 minutes. They made a very unusual backdrop. It almost looks like he is sitting in the library of an english manor in the first shot.

This next shot paints a pretty good picture of what the neighborhood looks like. Lots of buildings going up with new construction flanking wherehouse buildings that have been there for many decades. Below on the right you will see the South Lake Union neighborhood center, behind which is the park where the super fun Muttmazing Race and SLU block party will take place on August 8th. If you are in the Seattle area you totally have to go and bring your dog! Fergie and I went last year and had a blast. The show an outdoor movie and have a beer garden and lots of vendors and food and well, just a great big summer party for everyone.

Some of you may have a Scraps in your area. We are lucky enough to have one in our city, and it gets a lot of traffic, sitting in the same complex as the new Pan Pacific hotel. Scraps has a really cool industrial vibe, and they have everything you could need for your pet. I was especially in awe over their huge clothing selection. I’m not normally a fan of clothes for dogs, but they had stuff there I would totally buy for Fergie if it fit her (and if she didn’t hate me for putting it on her, lol). I LOVE the signs.

Inside the store. That amazing wall-sized photograph was done by my friend Emily Rieman, owner of Best Friend photography. BTW: you totally have to go check out Emily’s new website, it is FANTASTIC! Isn’t that wall amazing? Check out the chairs below it too.

Below we have Lake Union Park, which provides stellar views to the north of Lake Union and Gasworks Park, and to the south of downtown Seattle.

The Naval Reserve building you see on the left below is the water side of the building on the right in the photo above. I loved the building so much I could have stayed there all day photographing it. The shot on the right is at the Wooden Boat Center, which, as you can see, is dog friendly. The center sits directly behind the Naval Reserve. It goes, park, then building, then boat center, then restaurants. Here is an aerial view. And another aerial view of the neighborhood. And a fascinating article on the history of the neighborhood.

Said Wooden Boat Center. Just to the left of the Boat Center are a bunch of great restaurants that sit on the shore of Lake Union. They all have decks overlooking the water and are the perfect place to have a meal and a drink and be happy to be alive. Jill the restaurants are right across the street from the Silver Could Inn, so it’s an awesome place to stay!!

Doing this kind of photography that day made me realize I really enjoy photography in general, not just of dogs and cats. Although I don’t think I’d ever want to make a living doing any other type of photography (nor do I think I’m good enough to), sometimes it’s fun to take the camera out and point it at things that aren’t covered with fur.

And last but not least, we have the SLUT (South Lake Union Transit). Takes you from the hotels and restaurants in SLU straight to downtown. AND, it’s dog-friendly! Woohoo!

So as you can see, South Lake Union is a great place to live, and/or visit, with your pooch. Please do pick up CityDog Magazine though for the full article, which this post just can’t do justice to. The writer includes some really great out of the way spots that I didn’t visit while there, and also writes more about special things you can do with your dog while there.

Hope you enjoyed this little peek into a corner of the city!

Cowbelly + CityDog Magazine Summer 2008 issue = Love

I’m positively bubbling over with excitement. That’s Seymour- left and Charlie- right (aka Trouble and Chaos) on the cover of the summer issue of CityDog Magazine, photographed by yours-truly, yay! The summer issue will be hitting newsstands near you toute-suite but you guys get the sneak peek here and on the CityDog blog. Also, look for my photography in the ‘Dog’s Eye View’ Neighborhood feature. I’ll post photos from that but first there’s a little contest I’ve gotta take care of (see below).

BTW: The images on the homepage of my newly updated website are a couple of ‘outtakes’ from one of our cover shoots. I’ll interview Charlie and Seymour in an upcoming post to get THEIR take on the whole experience. And what an experience it was!

Thanks Brandie for asking me to photograph the cover (and for being excited when I said yes!), thanks Victoria for saying yes and being as happy as I hoped you would be to participate and for being so patient with the process, and thank you Mother Nature for finally cooperating with us! And of course thank you boys, I love you both dearly!! (even if you do eat my greeting cards and stand on the coffee table and bark in princess fergermeister’s face, heh heh).

For those of you who haven’t seen this magazine, you simply must subscribe; it’s rad.

More backstory on the cover shoot(s) soon!

Yay, magazine covers yay!

Oh also, I’ll be announcing the winner of the ‘slice of life‘ photo contest very shortly! I already know who wins, but don’t tell anyone, shhhh….

sneak-peek + contest

Since I can’t show the editorial photography I have done recently for CityDog Magazine until the summer mag actually comes out, I decided to provide a sneak peek of sorts at the shots I have taken for the ‘Dog’s Eye View’ article for the summer 2008 issue.

I am calling this photographic art piece ’slice of life’.

(I dig this piece so much I am getting it printed as a wide canvas for my bedroom wall. I’ll be making more of these in the future for sure!) You will need to maximize your browser window. Having issues with blogger’s image uploading- hopefully can fix it later so you can view the image larger in a new window.

This photographic art image is also a contest!

The first person to accurately guess which Seattle neighborhood this is wins a mini-shoot with me for their dog(s) in the very same neighborhood the shots were taken in!! (note: shoot is good for up to 2 dogs and must take place in either June or July of 2008. Prints are not included)

The ALSO win a year subscription to CityDog Magazine!

Woohoo!!

Here is how to enter the contest: leave a comment in the comments section of this post (click on where it says ‘# of comments’), with your guess of neighborhoods, or send me an email to info@cowbelly.com, and the first person to accurately guess wins! Also, PLEASE email me if you leave your guess anonymously as a comment, and/or if you don’t have a link back to your blog/website in your commenting name.

The neighborhood may seem impossible to guess but there are a few slices that are dead giveaways.

Good luck and have fun!!
