Parker- Ambassador of Public Relations + CityDog Magazine Muttmixer

This adorable little guy is Parker. You will see more of him in the upcoming Winter issue of CityDog Magazine. I’ll give you a heads-up when it hits newsstands. :-)

Speaking of CityDog Magazine, a reminder that the annual Valentines Day Puppy Love CityDog Muttmixer is tonight! It’s at the gorgeous W Hotel in downtown Seattle, runs from 6pm-8pm, is dog-friendly, and I can attest from experience, is a blast for both you and your pups. Dress up, drink some champagne, socialize with other dog lovers, and maybe even meet someone special for you and your pooch. I’ll be staying in tonight, as I’m still trying to recover from the exhaustion of moving, and for those who know the normally energetic outgoing party-girl me, you know I MUST be tired, lol. Fergie and I will be there in spirit though!

Cowbelly shoots AAA Journey Magazine ‘No Dog Left Behind’ article

The most exciting project I’ve worked on to date came out in the mail a week ago while I was in Chicago. The September/October issue of Journey magazine, AAA Travel’s bi-monthly membership publication. Yours-truly did the photography for the cover feature article, about traveling in the Pacific Northwest with your dog. I am so psyched about this I can’t even tell you!

What you see above are scanned copies of the covers. The online images were too small to do justice to the blog, so I had Christina scan them (pardon the poor quality, my Canon scanner is broken so we had to use the cheap HP). There are two magazines: Puget Sound Journey which is distributed in Washington, and Western Journey, which is distributed in Idaho, as I understand it. Both magazines have different content, so we shot for both of them. The distribution for both mags combined is nearly 570,000 homes, which is apparently the biggest distribution of any magazine in the state! I still can’t believe the numbers of emails I have gotten on this, from the most random people (an old friend of my dad’s in Port Townsend, a former fellow dog walker from *years* ago, multiple clients I haven’t seen in eons, NEW clients, a neighbor of my mom’s, etc, etc). The editors warned me to ‘be ready’ when it came out and boy they were right! Whoopee!

What is so exciting about this project is that they didn’t just come to me to buy an image for the cover, and/or a few for the article, they came to me to do an assignment shoot, which involved me picking the best model for the job, suggesting the best locations for the story, and infusing my own creative ideas into the project. PLUS they gave me a contributor’s bio, and I swear it doesn’t get any better than that! I so love this article! PLUS, it’s literally overflowing with suggestions on places to go and things to do with your dog. I swear it’s the most content-rich dog article I’ve ever seen. AND, much of it is spoken in Henri’s words, which is so adorable, and somehow they managed to pull it off without sounding cheesy.

Although the art director wanted a golden retriever or large mutt for the project, I knew right away we needed to use Henri, the airedale terrier who usually just goes by ‘H’. I could literally visualize him in this article so I pushed him and he sold. For locations I suggested Norm’s Eatery in Fremont, the Magnolia bluffs, and Kerry Park on Queen Anne. They had already lined up a shoot at Hotel Max downtown (love Hotel Max!), which is where the Puget Sound Journey cover shot was taken. We used a few shots of H from last summer at the OSP, and the rest were taken specifically for the article. The art director wanted a shot with downtown and the Space Needle in the background (not as easy as it sounds folks) for one of the covers, but I had my own ideas. I wanted a shot of H with his head hanging out a car window, with the wind in his hair and the blue sky behind him, on his own big adventure. I was determined. I gave them all of the shots they asked for and was thrilled when they told me they were going with that shot for one of the covers and the inside spread!

Stephanie Bricca the art director, and Nicole Meoli the editor-in-chief were both a joy to work with (both dog owners so it’s no surprise) and the entire experience will go down as one of the most rewarding of my career. Plus the fact that it followed fellow Seattle photographer Chase Jarvis‘ cover feature in the last Journey issue just makes it that much sweeter. OH, AND, what makes this so much cooler than being involved with any old publication is that I am a member of AAA, receive Journey in the mail, and read it cover to cover every month. When I had Stephanie Bricca on the phone the first time I was literally in the process of reading Chase Jarvis’ article in the last issue! I positively love to travel and this magazine couldn’t be a better fit for me, my lifestyle and, I like to think, my photography. :-)

If you don’t already have a copy and want one, there is only one way to get one and that is to become a AAA member! I don’t even have any copies to spare myself, but it’s all good as my family members are all members already.  My sister left me a voicemail after receiving the article “I had no idea you did that Journey shoot, but when I got the mag in the mail today I knew before even opening the magazine the cover shot was your image!”. Ah, the best compliment I could ever get. :-)

Thanks for letting me gloat everyone! Hope you are having a great labor day!

New Bark Magazine ad

Some of you may have seen my Bark Magazine ad in the current issue.

I updated the ad for the upcoming issue: July-August, 2009. I’m thrilled to finally be on the pages of one of my favorite magazines. :-) Check it out.

I love the stripey background colors and wish I could get away with that on my blog, but tried it out late one night and wow (!), way too much color, even for me.

Oh, and yes, that does say consulting there in the ad. If you are interested give me a shout! I am finalizing details this weekend and hope to have all of the information posted as a page on both the workshops website and a page on this blog, by Monday. I’ll be taking *very* limited private phone and 1-on-1 consults this summer so if you are interested don’t wait to contact me!

New painting featuring the summer issue of CityDog Magazine

I was positively delighted when Brandie sent me the photo of this amazing painting a couple of weeks ago. It’s called ‘Barkalounger’, was painted by  Washington artist Connie Townsend, and is on display over in Kirkland, Washington at the Howard/Mandville Gallery. It is for sale and I don’t know if it’s still there but you can call Pat Howard at the gallery and find out: 425-889-8212. It is of course an original one-of-a-kind and features the summer issue whose cover was shot by yours-truly. Of course, I love it because it’s a pug. Go pugs!! I get to shoot another pug tomorrow night, yippee. :-)

CityDog Magazine summer cover 2008 behind-the-scenes: Charlie & Seymour interview

I figure I could tell you all about the interesting experiences we had shooting the summer cover for CityDog Magazine, but I thought it would be much more interesting to hear it from the mouths of the cover models, so I present to you, my interview with the (now famous) Charlie and Seymour (aka Trouble and Chaos). Sorry this was so long coming! Charlie and Seymour were in Manhattan all last week shooting the new Pucci ad campaign and were kind of hard to track down for their interview.

Below: Charlie (left), Seymour (right)

Cowbelly: Tell us about your experience being cover models for the first time. Where did you go? How long were you there?

C & S: well, it was a whirlwind. mom didn’t tell us till the last minute since she knew we’d take her amex and go have a spa day. so when she told us we were going that evening to see jamie, we wish we would have had time for that paw-dicure and seaweed deep conditioning fur treatment. so, the first day we went to this awesome park where we got to see jamie again (yay jamie! - pug shout out), mom said it was in West Seattle? we think that shoot was a few hours, but something about the lighting just wasn’t working out. the next shoot was at Discovery Park, and that one was fun since we got to go on a hike to get there, so we got to tone up our muscles for the photo shoots and all those ladies who love us. mom made us get wet on the beach that time. we aren’t too fond of water, so that wasn’t the higlight of the shoot, but mom promised jamie would make it up to us, and oh she did with those salmon treats! the final shoot was back in West Seattle. And let us tell you, we were tuckered at that one. it was so much fun, but we couldn’t wait till we got to lay down, it was hot that day!

Cowbelly: As a cover model, what did you have to do?

C & S: well, we had to look pretty. which, for us pugs is not too difficult, however it was alot of work to try getting them the right shot. we were frustrating our mommy we think, she kept trying to get us to follow commands, but those stinky treats jamie had were just way too hard to resist. we couldn’t help it.

Cowbelly:  What was your favorite part about being a cover model?

C & S: all the people fawning over us! we loved those treats (another pug shout out to jamie!) would have been better though if our trailer had evian and fresh bagels.

Cowbelly: What was your least favorite part?

C & S: the pressure of making sure we were both on top of our game at the same time. Seymour here- it was hard for me to give Charlie the limelight like that. something about his coloring or I dunno. but I sulked for a few hours after we got home just so mom knew I needed attention.

Cowbelly: What was is like working with Jamie?

C & S: pug-tac-ular. (and we don’t give that honor to just anyone, just so you know) she made us feel right at home in front of that camera. we think that it really helped to show our personalities in the shots. plus, there isn’t a person in the world we’d rather go see, she has the best treats and gives us lovin and tells us we are pretty. we like hearing we are pretty. (have we said that yet? anyone who feels like telling us we are pretty gets a pug smile and cute lil head tilt. we promise)

Cowbelly: Would you ever do it again?

C & S: oh yes! in a heartbeat. (ahem, but see question #3 about the bagels please)

Cowbelly: Thank you Charlie and Seymour! I’ll let you get back to your pug-tinis and pawdicures! (They were on the set of their next film ‘Pugs in Paradise’, taking a break).

And here are a couple of outtakes from our cover shoot. Ah yes, being a model is hard work, as any pooch who has worked on assignment with me knows.

And below you will find my very favorite images from our shoots, what I call “running dogs’ shots.

A couple of weeks ago when I was in bed with food poisoning I stumbled upon a discussion post on theknot.com wedding forum that was posted by a woman who said she loved my work and was jealous. All of her friends replied with “oh there is nothing special about that photography”, “you could totally do that”, “that’s easy.”. To all of those people, I challenge you to get 31 images like this of dogs running in an 8-minute time span and then tell me it’s easy. You can send the link to your 31 photos to info@cowbelly.com. ;-)

Hope you enjoyed Charlie and Seymour!!
