what I am up to now

It has been a long day today. (I still consider it ‘today’ because I haven’t gone to bed yet). Starting with a shoot at 11am, followed by the rest of the day and night spent in the studio working on client orders. Things would have gone fine, except that NOTHING WAS WORKING RIGHT. ‘Nothing’ meaning, software, internet, phone, even simple little image uploaders weren’t working. I am convinced that I have some sort of weird magnetic force field that every so often goes awry, causing all electronic equipment near me to get all freaked out. Either that or mercury is in retrograde or something. Whateve. It’s more than a little irritating.

I have been toiling away lately. Nearly every day for the last two weeks I have either had a photo shoot, studio consult with a client, phone meeting or other appointment. Christina has been doing an AWESOME job keeping me on track. I think I have something like 42 clients on my boards right now. (Crazy I know). How do I do it? My aforementioned assistant. Let me tell you there is NO WAY I could do all of this without regular help. Christina only works about 15 hours per week but she rocks so hard that every day I grow closer to only doing what I love- taking pictures, working in photoshop and lightroom and designing art. Awesome. Thank you Christina for everything you do for me!

Anyway, I am working my way through my pile of client orders (*finally* made order forms, whoopee!!), and thought I would share with you guys some of the things I worked on today, in case you maybe thought I fell off the planet.

Yorkies photobooks. Tiggz below.

Back cover (L). Front cover (R). The front cover was his mom’s idea. Brilliant eh? If you are in a service-based business, I recommend always being open to your client’s suggestions. Often they can be smarter and more creative than you.

Photobook pages.

I love the end page. Makes me laugh out loud.

More yorkies photobooks. Brodie & Taz. Oh, and Roscoe the kitty! Roscoe is the coolest, most laid back, friendliest, most affectionate cat EVER. I love him so much and want to steal him and have him live with me.

I believe below it’s supposed to say Charles something-or-other. (Brilliant observation Jamie). Sorry, it’s late….

The shot below looks like a poster or something. No, it’s a real photograph and I actually took it. Amazing outfit, eh? Remember the shoes

Ok, so that’s one, actually, two orders. The next order is Loodie and Max. They are both getting prints and canvases. The canvases are my favorites. I feel so incredibly honored that they are being hung in their soon-to-be new baby twins nursery. Huge congrats Peter and Hope!!

Then there’s Junepug and Shelby. Just in case anyone is confused, Junepug’s name is actually June, but I have given her the moniker ‘Junepug’ because it seems to fit her so. And Shelby, what can I say about Shelby. She touched my heart from the second I met her, and is the first dog to ever be in the company of a pug that I paid more attention to than said pug. *Especially* a baby pug. I just don’t have words to express my experience with Shelby. I think I am going to stop trying, because I’m not sure that anyone would understand.

June’s canvas. Her first experience with water. Check out her first time with feet in water. Hee hee.

Shelby’s prints. I think the shot on the right is my favorite of her.

June’s print. Weird, what’s up with all of the stripey lines? I swear things look perfect in LR and bridge, and when I upload them they get all wacked out. I need to check my ’save for web’ settings; I have been noticing too many problems lately. Don’t even get me started on the whole sharpening thing. Ugh, technology. :-P

And the last thing I worked on today was a CD for Kaiya. She is another dog I fell in love with. Ok, truth be told, I fall in love with them all! I wish you guys could have seen the fawn doberman I shot today. A christmas gift so it will have to wait.

I have lots more new dog photos to share, but first need to meet my photobook printer’s deadline which is this Friday! (One more photobook to go!) Thanks everyone for being so patient with me. You guys, my lovely blog readers, rock!!

new telephoto lens- the answer

Are you ready?

I got the Canon 70-200mm L-series IS 4.0 lens. NOT the 2.8.

Here is why.

First, money was not the issue. I had $1800 cash to spend on a lens, but wanted to be absolutely sure that the lens I bought was the one I really wanted, regardless of cost.

It came down to weight vs. sharpness vs. speed. I had to ask myself, how much is speed really a consideration? I decided that speed wasn’t the primary consideration, and that sharpness and weight were the top two issues. BUT, having said that, the 4.0 buys you two whole stops with the image stabilization enabled. (On still shots anyway). This narrowed the competition a bit on speed.

The 4.0 is also *considerably* lighter than the 2.8, which is important when one is traveling and covering lots of ground with their gear, like I did for my Sonoma/Napa shoots. Trust me, the lighter your camera bag when trying to stuff it in a tiny overhead compartment on a tiny plane, the happier you will be.

Back when I was asking for advice I recalled people saying “you get what you pay for” and “the 2.8 is a much better lens”.

Which leads me to sharpness. For those who say “the 2.8 is a much better lens” the 4.0 is actually much sharper. If you equate sharpness with quality then which lens do you think is better?

The 4.0 is so sharp that the images that come from the lens *need no sharpening* post-process. Simon touched on the fact that some of my images from my Sonoma shoots are overly sharp- this is totally right as I am discovering that the images coming from the lens, again, need no extra sharpening in PS.

Need proof? This is what was the deciding factor for me. Scroll your mouse over the little arrow above the middle of the image to compare lenses:

the digital picture 100% crop comparison between the 4.0 IS L and the 2.8 IS L

The 4.0 may not be the best lens for everyone, but I can tell you it’s perfect for my needs. Also, after doing my research online, I learned there is small but significant movement of people who are selling their 2.8 lenses for the 4.0. Interesting.

Now, having said that, I somewhat regret buying the lens in the first place. Why? Because it’s on the opposite end of the spectrum from where I am happiest shooting- the wide end. There is something about a wide dog photograph that I find immensely appealing, and the lens that I have been really wanting- my dream lens if you will, is the 16-35mm 2.8 L-series. I have a feeling that if I had bought that instead it would be on my camera at least 50% of the time. I love, love, love my 20mm prime lens, and only wish it were an L-series as it’s pretty soft. But, I have been using it more and more recently, and am reminded every time I look at the images why I love it so much.

BUT, I needed a telephoto at least 10% of the time, so I am glad I got it. But I can promise you, the next lens I buy will be the 16-35. I just need to come up with $1500 first, lol.

Thank you to all of those who helped me with this, especially Craig, for generously sharing image samples and unbiased advice. And to Mia, for agreeing with light weight vs. fast speed.

Lens stuff can be so complicated, but when you get ones you really love it just makes shooting that much more fun. :-)

November + holiday 2008 schedule update

I am on vacation now (I swear I am!) but wanted to do a quick post on my schedule. My November shoots and art schedule is filling up unsettlingly fast, with Christina booking clients for me while I am gone. (From Friday through Monday we got no fewer than 7 new requests for shoots and art! yowza). I also don’t know if I mentioned this but November 14th-16th I will be on Mt Rainier photographing a backcountry snowboarding trip for the Seattle Times. I have a good girlfriend who is a travel writer for the Times and she volunteered me to do the photography. When she asked me I was interested in doing it I was like “UH, yeah-uh”. Are you kidding? Get paid to do the two things I love most in the world AT THE SAME TIME?! Although it’s nearly impossible for me to get away for a weekend at this time of the year, this is one opportunity I couldn’t pass up!

So that nixes one precious weekend in November- the busiest month of the year for Cowbelly. Which leaves me with *I think* just a couple weekend days still open to do holiday shoots.

So if you are reading this and you are planning on working with me for a holiday gift this year or would like to squeeze in a shoot before year’s end, please contact Christina THIS WEEK! I anticipate by week’s-end I will be fully booked for the rest of the year. At that point I will be referring holiday work out to one of my many talented colleagues.

Oh and, after reading Grace’s comment about SF in January I checked out the average temps for SF, Marin County and Tiburon specifically (the locations I need to come back to) and wow, it IS awful! So no trip in January. Maybe November, but it’s a *big* maybe (see above).

Oh and, gosh darn it about the projected showers in Seattle this weekend. (And Sonoma Valley AND SF!). I have shoots booked on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Seattle and I thought that I could maybe reschedule them due to Seattle rain and stay in California for two extra days and do the commercial job, but alas- RAIN everywhere, wahhhh!

Oh well, I will be returning to Seattle on Friday, and will do the shoots this weekend and will make it work just as I always do. It hasn’t stopped me in my 5+ years of doing this and it won’t stop me now. Yucky weather be damned! :-)

And on the topic of holiday work lest you think I forgot about the ‘you know me‘ post where I ask people to tell me about themselves, and promised to select a winner of a pack of holiday greeting cards, I have not forgotten! Sometime close to Thanksgiving I will select a winner. I will also leave my comments on the replies I haven’t replied to yet if that makes any sense.

Lastly, I will be taking 2-3 weeks off following Christmas, from 12/23-1/14 or so, so plan for that as well. You can expect things to be very quiet on this blog for awhile following the holidays.

Is there anyone else besides me who is shocked that we are nearing the end of 2008? Where does the time go?!

a meeting

Today I had a 3 hour meeting with Christina. For those of you who are new to my business, Christina is my assistant. My office manager, my customer service rep, my right-hand gal. The smiling and enthusiastic face on the other side of the room, taking care of all of the little details I simply don’t have time for.

We have been trying to have this meeting for weeks, but there has been so much going on that it just wasn’t feasible. Today was the day to finally make it happen.

We met at Starbucks, and over the course of the afternoon talked about, well, pretty much everything having to do with Cowbelly.

The conclusion that both of us came to, especially me, is that things need to change. And quickly.

For a long time now there has been too much.

Too many clients, too many projects, too many orders, too many photo shoots, too many emails (uh, did anyone see my post on Monday?), too many phone calls, too many details, too many deadlines, too many obligations, too much work.

Just too much.

(And I am not including the workshops in these, which didn’t actually take that much prep work in the weeks leading up to them!). It is simply impossible for anyone on the outside to really understand just how crazy things are at the Cowbelly HQ.

As a small business owner I am acutely aware that poorly managed growth can kill a business. I don’t want this to be me. I am balancing on a precipitous edge.

So things need to change.

First, although I have gotten good at saying no, I need to get better. Although I have been choosy, I need to be very, very choosy about which opportunities I decide to take. I need to be able to quickly asses if something will be worth my time, both in terms of effort outlay and time obligations involved.

Second, I need to reign in my desire to keep starting new personal projects. I am currently working on a book project (project #2- and book project #1 isn’t even done yet- see the crux?), that I positively LOVE, so instead of saying “oh I am going to get this done this year” I am giving myself an infinite amount of time to do it. It needs to be fun, it needs to happen organically, and really, I am in no hurry.

All of these projects simply distract me from the most important thing- doing the best I can for my clients.

Third, I need to be more realistic with how long things will take me. For whatever reason, I was born thinking I am superwoman. In reality this is so not the case. I simply cannot be all things to all people at all times. This is what I have been trying to do, and honestly, it’s killing me.

Fourth, I need to stop trying to please everyone. I always say “I am not in the business of disappointing people”, but I am starting to learn (or rather- forcing myself to learn) that disappointing people is inevitable, if I am NOT going to be all things to all people. The reason why this is so painfully challenging for me is because I WANT to do these things. I WANT to do everything and be everywhere and meet everyone and be involved as much as I can with, well, everything. My desire to be a giving person, and my unchecked expression of passion for life is taking away my ability to live a normal, stable, healthy life, if that makes any sense (it does to me). This phenomenon is so common that Nichole’s talented writer mom wrote a book on it called “The Curse of the Competent Woman”. Um, I am suggesting to myself that I read it. Like, right away.

Fifth, I need to, and will be, taking on less clients every month. If I do nothing else, this is the first and most important thing I need to do. The painful part about this is that it will mean increasing my waiting list. Which inevitably results in disappointing people. People who often really want to work with me, but are moving, or need it right away as a gift, or were hoping to do it before the weather changed, or while their dog is still a pup, or before they change residences (etc, etc, etc). People that I really WANT to work with. Wonderful, amazing people with wonderful, amazing pets. There are so many reasons why it’s hard for people to plan ahead- all of which I empathize with and understand. Having a 6 or 8 week (or longer!) waiting list makes it extremely hard for me to be flexible and spontaneous, and means that there will be opportunities for shoots that I won’t be able to do. Some photographers may envy having a waiting list, for me, it’s just painful. Until I feel comfortable hiring a 2nd assistant to do a lot of my processing, photo editing and photography-related work, the only solution is to have a waiting list.

Sixth, Christina’s whole world working with Cowbelly is about to change. She will now be working more hours, and have a much more structured use of her time while at the studio. She will also be working regular hours, Monday-Friday, regardless of whether or not I myself am at the studio. Last week she finally got (ahem- was given) her own set of keys, so now she can come and go without me there. This makes so much more sense and on a practical level will result in the business being run so much more effectively by both of us.

Christina will also be taking charge of projects I have wanted to do for a long time but just haven’t had time for. She will be taking on a lot more responsibility and will stand in for me when I am not able to be 2 people at one time. She will respond to emails I would normally reply to, to people I know on even a personal level, simply because I can’t do it all. She will become an even more integral part of my business, and help me reach an even greater level of success and one that is much more feasible to maintain.

Seventh, although I love working with and near other long-established photographers at the studio, I have grand dreams of getting my own space, and possibly even soon. Now, the vacant space in our building that I am drooling over is $2200 per month, and before you jump to any conclusions, I am not THAT successful to even begin to afford something like that. But still, I am keeping my eyes peeled for the perfect space in the same complex that would be all my own. I can be an easily distractible person (except for in a shoot- that is an entirely different story), and the less distractions and noise and ‘external stuff’ that I need to think about, the easier it is for me to concentrate on my own business. Yes, the studio is awesome, but yes, I would love to get my OWN studio. Now I am making it a goal to happen sooner rather than later.

Eighth, I will be refining my business systems. I have always had systems in place, but they have been more abstract and less concrete, which is fine when you don’t have an assistant. When a business grows to the point that responsibilities are being delegated to others, the business needs to have effective, clear, useful systems in place. One example: I haven’t used order forms in years. Partly because I have had so many products, and so many changes to products, that it would have been impossible to create and maintain a form. Also partly because I have been so busy for so long I simply haven’t had time to develop a form. Now I have learned ways to make a form work exactly as I need it to, and can take the time to create it, which will create a much better and more effective system in the future.

Ninth, I will be highly selective in the commercial and editorial projects I take on from here on out. I let slip a huge commercial opportunity a couple of months ago that would have kept me busy for a good chunk of 2009, but in retrospect I am happy it didn’t happen- I just couldn’t do it.

Last, I will be taking more time for myself. I don’t know how or when, or what this will look like, but whatever risk I run in pushing away and saying “I need a break” I am going to take that risk. I am toying with the idea of heading out of town next week for two nights, even though I have the upcoming trip to Sonoma. Of finding a cabin nearby, bringing the Fergs, some good magazines and just chilling.

And I am sure there are many more things that will change along with these, and things will grow and happen organically, but I feel really good about understanding where my business is now, where it needs to go, what my goals and needs are, and what I need to do to make this business the best it can possibly be, and make me the best photographer, and person, I can possibly be. In many ways I feel I am just getting started.

What WON’T change?

The work I have already promised clients for the remainder of 2008, my plans for 2009 workshops, or the schedule I intend to carry next year, the private client shoots I will be doing in other cities in tandem with the workshops, the products I offer, the style of photography I provide, the value I place in my professional and personal relationships, the new friendships I have forged with my workshop attendees, the frequency of posts on this blog, my involvement with CityDog Magazine, the long-held goal of providing photography to clients outside of Seattle, the amount of love I feel for each furry client I meet, the value I place in my clients, the quality of work I give my clients (which has always been high- one of the reasons it’s so hard to maintain at a large volume), the love and dedication I give to my pooch, the desire I hold to always learn more, and constantly stretch my mental and creative muscles, and lastly, and most importantly, my passion for my business, and my love for helping others reach their dreams.

I have never been more passionate about photography, or my business, or people or animals before ever. I am so excited to see what lies ahead, and what new doors open, what incredible adventures I have yet to go on, and what good, warm-hearted people I have yet to meet. I really do feel that life just keeps getting better.

THAT SAID, I am getting really tired of all of the yakking on my blog, and am really missing the photos (!) as I am sure you guys are too! Tomorrow I will be putting up a post on Workshop II highlights, and from then on it will be new photos- lots of photos, for as long as I can do it without yakking again.

Expect a darling white maltese with floaty fur, a tear-jerking story about a pug, a couple of tributes to pets who have passed, some photos of two miniature goldendoodles (who knew they even existed!?), another tear-jerking post + photos about a poodle, some fall shots of a golden retriever, more low-key black and white shots of a cool-looking mutt, and if the gift gets given beforehand, some shots of the cutest chocolate lab boy ever. So stay tuned! No more boring business stuff for awhile I promise!

OH- one more thing! If you get really sick of hearing me talk, and all you want to do is look at the pretty pictures, click on ‘private client shoots’ under the ‘categories’ menu at the top. Less talk, more photos.

Here is a photo of Fergie just so I can say this post wasn’t ALL words. :-)

Thanks everyone for following my blog. It means more to me than you could ever know. :-)

an ocean of emails

My goal this week (among other things), is to catch up on emails that have been needing reply for days, or even weeks in some cases.

I counted my flagged emails list this morning when I woke up and had 97 flagged emails requiring reply. (Yep, that’s ninety-seven. No, not all from one day!).

Since 10am I have managed to send 41 emails, so I am making a dent. IF you are one of the unfortunate people who has been awaiting an email reply from me, I just want to thank you sincerely for your patience! Everyone has been so nice in understanding how busy I am, and I think it’s a testament to just how great my clients are. A workshop attendee and friend who attended Workshop II this weekend said a quote that has stuck with me: “like attracts like”. I am truly humbled if my clients are a reflection of me and who I am. I do believe that you get back what you put out there, BUT, I am also lucky to work with such awesome people!

SO, awesome people, I hope to get through as many of those 97 emails today as possible, to finish completely by tomorrow night.

Print and canvas orders are being submitted this week, 3 clients will get proofed, and a couple of art commissions are being started this week as well. And for my Sonoma fans, I promise to finalize all of the details and schedule in the next couple of days!

And for you my dear blog followers, I have lots of pictures! A few from the workshop this weekend, and a whole bunch from dog shoots I have done recently. I am excited to share. Just kinda wishing I could clone myself, lol. After 2008 ends I may need a month off. In Tahiti. :-)

Cheers!

Yes, yes fergie I do. Yes I do.
