little lip

Her little lip. It kills me every time.

What do you think of my new dog tags logo? I’m just experimenting, trying on new logos for size. I like the dark grey version of this better, but you can’t see it on this shot. I’ll keep playing.

details of home- inside

A few of you know that my passion next to dogs and pet photography is interior design, a love I got from my mom. I’ve had an awesome time decorating my new place. While it’s far from done, I’m a lot farther than I was when I moved in.

The outside of the back door on the left. The inside of the door on the right. The home was owned for many years by gardeners, hence the little garden tool door knocker. And the inside of the door is covered with chalkboard paint. I scribbled this on there the day we moved in in February, and it has remained that way ever since.

The inside of the house is filled with character too. I usually try and keep fresh flowers on the kitchen counter.

_mg_8599

The dining room has a built-in cabinet with leaded glass doors, perfect for a liquour cabinet. And those who know me know I love my fancy spirits.

Below on the right is an adorable little painting my friend Angie did of Fergie as a housewarming gift for me. If you haven’t yet seen her work, you must check out Art by Angie, and think about commissioning a piece of your own smily pooch.

Below is the original tile wood-burning fireplace, topped by a white wood mantle . I *love* the fireplace. I’m working on finding the perfect accessories for the mantle, which will most likely include a terrarium and ceramic vase from etsy, but for now I have my hand-carved oaxacan antelope, a very special college graduation present from my dad. We had seen the antelope in a store in oldtown in San Diego, and fell in love with it. A week later when we got home, my dad surprised me with it at my graduation party. I cried happy tears.

Below is an oil painting my mom did in the 70′s that’s hanging in my dining room. I have a very similar, much larger painting hanging in my living room, both of which are framed in simple chunky maplewood frames. I love the funky 70′s retro feel of the paintings, and love that they were done by my own mom. (Go mom!)

On the right below is a large acrylic painting I did many years ago, a centerpiece in the bedroom. The painting is titled ‘water’. Not as industrious or cool as my mom’s oil paintings (acrylic is much easier than oil!), but I still love it nonetheless.

_mg_8655

One of my biggest splurges below- the white leather bed. *Love*. (Both the headboard and footboard are tufted leather like you see below).

_mg_9681

The bedroom has a Hollywood Regency flair, with whites, silvers and blues. Lots of reflective surfaces and cool colors.

The master bathroom below, where I turned a cloth shower curtain into a lovely light-filtering window panel.

_mg_8634

With a large custom travertine tile walk-in shower in the master bathroom, and a jacuzzi tub in the guest bath, I’ve never been more spoiled in a house. The window below is in the shower, and required a little creative privacy solution. That’s just regular frosted window film topped with a removable wall decal.

And finally, my new home office. I love, love this space. It’s super bright and airy, which I think is due in large part to both the freshly painted white walls AND white painted floor and large windows. The office is perfectly utilitarian, and has an awesome walk-in closet with a packaging station and large filing cabinet. It’s downright perfect for my modest little business.

_mg_9843

When I had my office at Studio 116 I wasn’t sure I’d ever be happy having a home office again, but since I’ve been working from home now for about 10 months I don’t think I’d ever have it any other way and don’t ever plan to have an office/studio away from home again. The key was figuring out a way to keep all business supplies and ‘junk’ confined to one space, and being able to truly have a private personal space away from business. With this house nothing work-wise leaks out of the office, so all I need to do when I’m done for the day is just close the office door. Love it.

_mg_9849

I still fill my office with inspiring little personal effects, including this framed print, one of the first pet photos I ever took about 10 years ago, using black and white film. That’s Lucy and Willa.

_mg_9860

Did y’all get your 2010 Cowbelly Wall Calendar?

_mg_9826

The next thing I need to get for my office is a comfortable white chair. I have one in mind that I love.

_mg_9854

A most inspiring office window view. The red rhododendrons you saw in the last post are just outside this window. I watch the little squirrel family run and play outside under the monkey tree. Yep, definitely beats being in a hot stuffy studio!

details of home- outside

I’ve been promising this to my facebook fans for weeks (ahem- months), and here it finally is- details of my new home- starting with pics of the outside. For those who don’t know, a few months ago I moved from a miserable living situation to a fantastic new place where I’ve been blissfully happy. After living on the edge of downtown for years, I made the decision to move to a quieter neighborhood in Seattle where I could have a bigger yard for the dog and a garden for me. To say that I’m in love with the outdoor space at my new house would be an understatement. The house has become a social scene, frequently filled with family and friends, and I positively cannot wait for summer barbeques. For the first time in many years, I have finally found ‘home’, and it feels so good.

The entire yard is filled with flowers. The roses on the left are what we pass by every time we go outside to the yard.

Every home with pets ought to have one of the stickers on the left below. On the right is the jasmine bush that scents the air next to the back door. Heavenly.

_mg_8533

I love that the yard is big enough that Fergie can get great exercise without needing to leave home. It’s like having our own dog park in our backyard. She can even make loops around the entire house while still being in the yard as the property is fenced all the way around the house. The large weedy area in the grass you see below used to be a garden plot. I plan to fill it in with grass as there is a 10′x10′ dirt plot next to the patio I plan to turn into a veggie garden. I am a salad addict and I think it will be amazing to grow my own lettuce and veggies.

I’m looking forward to having fresh fruit from the fruit trees this summer. Anyone have any good dessert recipes involving pears?

_mg_8593

For those who follow me on twitter, when you hear me say I’m outside working on my laptop on my patio, I’m sitting in the chair with it’s back to the camera below (usually with Fergie right there too, waiting for me to throw her ball, lol). And you can’t see it in this shot, but behind the rose bush behind the table is an outdoor outlet where I can plug in my laptop charger when it’s dry out. I cannot wait for more nice weather days so I can spend more time working outside. It’s definitely one of the perks of being self-employed and working from home. I can’t imagine a prettier ‘office’.

_mg_1491

The yard is filled with trees, which make the perfect home for birds of all kinds. There is a bluejay family that comes to visit every day- two larger adults and one small juvenile. I plan to get a hummingbird feeder for the summer, as I suspect I’ll see those little guys around too.

_mg_8553

The window on the left below is my home office, which you’ll see in the next post. I was so excited when I was sitting inside working one day recently and noticed the rhododendrons had  finally bloomed and I saw that they were the same color as the Cowbelly branding. My sister said it’s serendipity. The house itself is a 1930 mediterranean stucco house, which is very rare in Seattle. The doors and windows are all tall and skinny, as are the doorways, and it makes me marvel at how different life was 80 years ago. What’s also awesome about living in a stucco house is that it stays warm inside in the winter and cool in the summer.

_mg_1479

I am probably the only person who would get excited about something like an oil cap in the ground, but I love that this house has so many little unique details which infuse the place with character. And in keeping with the mediterranean spirit, the property has palm trees scattered here and there. (Also rare in the PNW). Oh, and that blue thing down there in the corner is a rain barrel, which at first I thought was ugly, but with all of those plants in the yard I have a feeling it will make a big difference when it comes to the water bill. There are 5 or 6 large rain barrels on the property.

_mg_8588

After living in a house that had a (non-dog-friendly) swimming pool and little in regards to a yard, Fergie loves to spend time circling the yard, sniffing every bush and tree, and rolling on her back in the grass. I’ve never seen her happier than she has been the past few months, which just makes my heart soar with joy.

_mg_1482

And finally this is where the pooch spends a lot of her time- on her bed in the breezeway between the house and garage, one of her favorite places to be. I look forward to hot summer nights when we can hang out out there, candle lanterns lit and an icy beverage in hand, just soaking up the cool summer night breezes.

_mg_1485

Thanks for taking the tour of the outside of my new place! Up next- the inside.

Graffiti dogs corgi sneak-peek

There has been wayyy too much text on this blog lately, and not enough photos. I’m about to change that (watch out!). We’ll start with a quick favorite from my shoot yesterday afternoon. More to come soon!

This is Eddie. He herds bulls. (More on that soon too!)
