Sydney & Sienna British Shorthairs

In Lightroom and Photoshop you have the ability to rate your images with stars. *Very* rarely do I ever give an image I create 5 stars. I think because I am always striving to be better, and also because, although confident, I don’t think I’m ‘da bomb’ when it comes to photography. However, I gave myself more 5 star ratings in these girls shots than I think I ever have. I positively adore these kitties, who live right up the hill from me on Queen Anne. I’d hang out on their living room and photograph them *any day*. Enjoy!

Spike & Kiki

Spike and Kiki are brother and sister to sweet Mattie, bless his little soul. I fell in love with Kiki and her gentle nature and darling underbite, and Spike’s big heart surrounded by a tough-guy exterior. They are both rescued pups too, which makes me love them that much more.

Does Spike remind you guys of anyone? hee hee

What do you guys think of my new scalloped edges? They were a serious PITA to create, but I finally have it down to where my blog image prep is fully automated, which will save me a bazillion hours over how I used to do it. Which means more time to post more images, yay!

My faves below. The shot here on the left is totally unlike anything I would normally post, but I find the colors and textures intriguing.

(NEW!) Green Mission Statement

I have been working on a new Green Mission Statement (in my head anyway) for the past couple of months, and today while waiting anxiously to see if my new workshops website will be launched by tomorrow (fingers-crossed! It’s out of my hands now), I decided to try and turn my thoughts into words. It was actually easier than I had expected it to be.

Although I live in the tree-hugging Pacific Northwest, I am not a fanatical environmentalist. I AM, however, concerned about the environment and my impact on it. Garbage pains my heart and soul, entire species going extinct makes me wish I wasn’t human, people contributing to waste (in a variety of different ways) angers me, the loss of rainforests saddens me, and the thought that I am part of all of that makes me feel deeply ashamed.

Therefore, it is my goal with not just my personal life, but my business life as well, to live a conscious life in regards to my impact on the world, not just spiritually and philosophically, but literally as well. So, my friends, I bring you, my long-anticipated (by me anyway) Cowbelly Green Mission Statement.

I am so happy I was finally able to put everything into words and have a model for running my business in a more thoughtful and conservative way.

I encourage everyone to think about the impact their lives have on the planet we live on, and even if you can only make one small change per day, every little bit makes a difference. For photographers wondering how to improve the ‘green-friendliness’ of their business, hope on over to greenerphotography.org for ideas, and for everyone, take a look at carbonfund.org to see how you can make a difference.

RIP sweet Mattie: 1997(ish)-2009.

Mattie passed over the rainbow bridge yesterday, to go play with his friends in the great dogpark in the sky. He went peacefully, with his parents by his side. I know he will be deeply missed by those who loved him, and even though I spent just a short time with him, he touched me in a way I will never forget. I feel so honored to have been able to be there to capture his little spirit. Thank you so much Mattie’s parents for giving me this opportunity. Words can’t express…

A little story from our shoot. We started Mattie’s shoot at Discovery Park early last Sunday morning. It was very very cold that morning, and poor Mattie was shivering like crazy, even though we had him wrapped up in his favorite blanket with a heating pad when we weren’t taking pictures. I felt so bad for him I suggested we go to their house, which isn’t far away. At that point I learned that Mattie has two younger siblings- Kiki and Spike (you will meet them in an upcoming post), and that they were both shy/nervous with strangers.

Sure enough, when we got to the house and got inside, Kiki was too shy to come near me, and poor Spike was so afraid all he’d do was bark at me from afar (they are both rescued pups). I walked over and laid down on the living room floor, flat on my back, with arms outstretched, so they could come and sniff me without intimidation. Mattie immediately came over and sat down right next to me, his little body pressed up against my side, as if saying “she’s ok, she’s my buddy”. This expression of acceptance and love from a dog I had just met nearly brought me to tears. That is the kind of pooch Mattie was, and just one of the many reasons why I will never forget him.

Rest in peace sweet little one, rest in peace.
